The center is a comprehensive research center being engaged in coastal zone and island technique development, basic applied research and coastal zone integrated management services. Some academic organizations such as Branch of Coastal Zone Development and Management of Chinese Society of Oceanography and Shandong/Qingdao Society of Coastal Engineering are affiliated to the center, and the center is also the director member of Chinese Society of Marine Engineering. The center’s main services include the technical services for coastal engineering construction, coastal zone and island resource and environment protection, marine oil engineering and submarine cable engineering with honesty and credit spirit and advanced technique, the provision of resource and environment information for marine management organizations and the technique support for management decision. In recent years, the center has made lots of characteristic achievements. There are 10 senior engineers (33%), 8 doctors (27%) in the center.

The center is equipped with advanced instruments, including Datasonics SIS-1000 side scan sonar/subbottom profiler combination system, SES-96 parametric array subbottom profiler, C-Boom subbottom profiler, Geopulse subbottom profiler, Klein 2000 all digital dual frequency side scan sonar system, Tinsley Model 5930 submarine cable detection system, marine cone penetration test system (MCPT), GXY-1 engineering drill, Aanderaa wearther station, water level recorder, recording current meter and wave and tide recorder.
